Free Fares on ABQ busses
Starting Monday, March 1, 2021, students age 25 and younger, along with seniors age 60 and over can ride all ABQ RIDE buses and Sun Vans for free. The free fares were announced on Transit Equity Day, February 3.
“Free fares make it easier for people in our community to get to work and school, access healthcare, or run errands, no matter whether they have a car or what neighborhood they live in. That’s key to a more equitable Albuquerque,” said Mayor Tim Keller.
Students 25 years of age or younger can board the bus or Sun Van for free with an ID from a college or post-secondary institution or a class schedule. Seniors 60 years of age and older (also referred to on ABQ RIDE’s website as “Honored Citizens”) will be asked to show their ID or their Transit Department-issued Honored Citizen ID to ride for free. The previous Honored Citizen age was 65+.
This new fare structure adds to the different types of passengers who already ride ABQ RIDE buses for free. They include:
- Students up to 18 years of age (ages 9 and younger must be accompanied by an adult; middle and high school students must show a student ID, class schedule or ABQ RIDE ID)
- UNM and CNM students, with a special sticker on their IDs
- Veterans
ABQ RIDE is considering a few modifications to the new free fares program that could take place as soon as next year. This includes providing post-secondary institutions such as colleges and other schools with special stickers for school IDs to help bus drivers better identify student riders.
“Momentum for free fares has been building since last year,” said Danny Holcomb, Transit Director. “They will further the cause of transit equity in our city and encourage more people to ride our buses.”
Military Families
We salute the brave and dedicated patriots who have worn the uniform of the United States, and we celebrate the extraordinary military families whose selfless service and sacrifice make our military the finest in the world. It is often overlooked that veterans make our country stronger by applying their military experience in their post-service lives.
In order to help our military servicemen and women, as well as their families, navigate post-service life, our team at TheBestSchools.org created an accessible and streamlined series of what to expect during and after a military career. Our guides delve deep into career pathways, educational opportunities post-service, and scholarships for military dependents and spouses. We appreciate your time and consideration and hope that through our shared dedication to our military, we can improve the livelihood of all together!
